Exploring peace and reconciliation through local history:  Fairgreen National School and St Mary’s Primary School

The cross‑border partnership between Fairgreen National School and St Mary’s Primary School reflects the theme of peace and reconciliation at the heart of their PEACEPLUS ASPIRE activities. Through shared sessions that build community connections, pupils from both schools have explored shared history, visited significant heritage sites and learned about conflict resolution. Their genuine enthusiasm for collaborating continues to shine each time they come together, strengthening connections and deepening mutual understanding across both communities.

In January, pupils explored local history and politics with a visit to Enniskillen Castle, where activities were tailored for both junior and senior classes, introducing the theme of peace and reconciliation across all ages. Junior classes delved into the past by exploring traditional toys, practising turn‑taking and sharing, and learning about early Fermanagh history. Senior classes went deeper into themes of conflict, colonisation, civil rights, and local historical movements – guided expertly by the Castle’s education team. This experience laid a rich foundation for their future shared sessions!

At another shared session in February, the morning began with a discussion about what matters most when working together. The children's responses were thoughtful and inspiring:

“Listen to each other.” “Help people.” “Be kind.” “Work together.” “Try.”

Building on their earlier learning from Enniskillen, pupils then moved into hands-on STEM activities - working in teams to design and build bridges. Through problem‑solving and creativity, they practiced communication, patience, and collaboration. PE sessions complemented this learning, with tactical games that required teamwork, strategic thinking, and collective decision‑making.

This partnership interweaves the theme of PEACEPLUS ASPIRE into their curriculum and embodies the aims of the programme by embedding shared education from a young age. With exciting programme ahead, this partnership helps create a society where differences are celebrated. From storytelling sessions exploring emotions, conflict resolution, fairness, and justice, to peace‑focused artwork as part of ongoing arts and crafts, and reciprocal community visits where pupils will explore each other’s local areas through guided history and nature walks, there is much for pupils and staff to look forward to. A special highlight includes Beryl, former Principal of Fairgreen NS, returning to lead a historical walking tour of Belturbet. With many meaningful activities planned, this partnership continues to grow from strength to strength.

PEACEPLUS ASPIRE (Advancing Shared Partnerships through Inclusive Relationships in Education) is a collaboration between Léargas, the Education Authority (lead partner), Early Years- the organisation for young children, National Childhood Network (NCN) and the Fermanagh Trust. The project is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). It aims to provide direct and sustained contact between children and young people from all backgrounds.
