Celebrating Differences and Creating Space for Open Dialogue in Dunfanaghy

12 June 2026
The long-running partnership between Cashelshanaghan National School (Presbyterian) and Faugher National School (Multi-Denominational) has helped foster open dialogue through shared experiences. From céilithe to sports days, these joint activities give pupils meaningful opportunities to explore their local areas, learn about each other’s backgrounds, and build connections across communities. A key element of this partnership was the opportunity for meaningful cross-community engagement. Through activities such as heritage walks, sports day at ATU, singing at nursing homes, and céilithe, pupils gained a deeper understanding of their communities and their role as active citizens within them. Most recently, in June, both schools took part in a local heritage trail in Dunfanaghy, visiting key sites across the town, including the Market Square and the local Catholic and Presbyterian churches. Guided by their tour guide and teachers, pupils spent time in each church, discussing the similarities and differences between the spaces. These conversations created a safe and respectful environment for open dialogue about the different denominations represented within the partnership.

During the visit, an educator from Faugher National School shared personal reflections on her connection to the local church, recalling how her grandparents decorated its windows for harvest and seasonal celebrations. This moment brought the learning to life, offering a meaningful example of PEACEPLUS ASPIRE in action, as pupils and staff alike celebrated differences while building mutual understanding through shared experiences. The day concluded with a visit to a local nursing home, where pupils performed for residents.
Beyond working together, overcoming challenges and creating space for open dialogue, this partnership extends learning beyond the classroom and into the wider community - an example of shared education and PEACEPLUS ASPIRE in action!
